How to Manage a Schedule on a Trip
Probably the number one question I’m asked is “how do I manage my schedule when I need to take a trip?”
My famous answer is: “You don’t”
With the winter holidays fast approaching, you’re probably starting to think about how you will maintain your schedule once you’re on the move. The thing is, whichever way you look at it, a trip is going to be disruptive for a baby. They’re outside of their environment, they need to sleep on the go a lot, and they might be travelling across time zones.
If you’re a parent taking a baby with you on a trip – good for you! Enjoy your trip as best as you can!
However, try not to have high expectations of your child’s sleep while on this trip. The reality is, it’s going to be difficult to manage the adjustments, it’s going to be challenging to be on the go a lot, and they’re going to have a hard time. It’s part of the risks we take when we agree to uproot ourselves.
Just. Do. The best. You can.
That’s it.
And remember that you are capable of getting back on track when you get home. Nothing is forever, nothing is ruined, and your child will sleep well again!’
That all being said, here are some tips that might make travelling that little bit easier:
1. Try scheduling travel times during nap times to get your child to sleep in the car/stroller/carrier
2. If sharing a room with your baby, try putting something like a piece or luggage or a chair between the crib and your bed so they are less likely to see you and expect to be picked up during the night.
3. Whenever possible, get a suite style accommodation so that you can easily put the baby to bed early when time allows.
